About the Film

SYNOPSIS

TROUBLE FINDS ME follows students Alex and Trelin through a pivotal school year at FREE LA High School, an alternative high school that once operated as a juvenile jail. The two young men face charges that could send them to prison instead of graduation. But their friends and teachers, Lupita and Jahzara, are fighting with them to transform a brutal juvenile justice system – not just for themselves, but for the next generation of systems-impacted kids.

In the heart of South Central Los Angeles, ghosts of the building’s former function remain – a door marked as the Sheriff’s office, empty jail cells, and judges’ podiums in the classrooms. Nearly a decade after the courthouse closed under pressure from young activists, these rooms now form a cop-free campus that attempts to bring peace, understanding, and self-knowledge instead of conventional discipline. But in a world that has labeled them as troublemakers since childhood, can this school provide what they need for lasting change?
